Bin collection days for every Christchurch suburb, what goes in each bin, and where to drop off everything else.

Christchurch has three kerbside bins: red for rubbish and yellow for recycling, each collected every two weeks, and green for food and garden waste, collected every week. Here is your collection day, what goes in each bin, and where to take everything else.

Have your bins out by 6am. A few streets differ from the rest of their suburb, so check your exact address with the council’s lookup.

  • Plastic bottles, trays and containers marked 1, 2 or 5, bigger than a yoghurt pottle and smaller than 4 litres

Public holidays

Bins are collected as normal on public holidays, except New Year's Day, Good Friday, Anzac Day and Christmas Day. When one of those falls on a weekday, collections run a day late for the rest of that week.

Coming up: Christmas Day is Friday 25 December, so Friday bins go out on Saturday 26 December. New Year's Day is Friday 1 January, so Friday bins go out on Saturday 2 January.

Good to know

Which bin goes out this week?

Your green bin goes out every week. Your red and yellow bins take turns, one each week. Every street is on the Week 1 or Week 2 calendar, and the calendar shows which bin goes out on which date.

What about the inner city?

Some inner-city streets use official red and yellow bags instead of bins. Rubbish bags are collected every night and recycling bags on Wednesday nights. Put them out between 5pm and 7pm.

My bin wasn't collected. What now?

Check the Christchurch Bins app for service alerts, then contact the council on 03 941 8999.
