Last updated October 2026

North New Brighton is a coastal suburb on the eastern edge of Christchurch, facing Pegasus Bay. Known in te reo Māori as Ōruapaeroa (or Ōrua Paeroa), the area was once an important mahinga kai rich in eels and birdlife for Ngāi Tahu.

Originally called North Beach and linked to the city by tram, it was renamed North New Brighton in 1953. Today it combines residential streets, a popular beachfront, schools, and major recreation facilities such as Taiora QEII. Visitors and residents find easy access to sand dunes, wetlands and community spaces along Marine Parade and Travis Road.

About North New Brighton

North New Brighton sits on Christchurch’s eastern coastline, bordered by the beach to the east and open spaces including Travis Wetland to the west. The Māori name Ōruapaeroa refers to the place of strong east winds and the former wetland and food-gathering grounds that once extended toward the sea.

Ngāi Tahu traditions record the area as abundant in eels, birds and, at times, sharks. Whare that stood into the mid-nineteenth century were destroyed after European land acquisition.

European settlement turned the district into a seaside holiday spot known as North Beach, easily reached by tram from the city.

The name change to North New Brighton in 1953 reflected its growing identity as part of the wider New Brighton coastal strip. Residential development filled the area between the dunes and inland wetlands, creating a mix of family homes and beachside living.

The 2011 earthquakes damaged local facilities, including the original Queen Elizabeth II Park site that had hosted the 1974 Commonwealth Games. The rebuilt Taiora QEII Recreation and Sport Centre now anchors community sport and leisure on Travis Road.

Schools were also reorganised: Rāwhiti School opened after the merger of earlier primary schools, while Shirley Boys’ High School and Avonside Girls’ High School relocated to the suburb.

Today the suburb offers a relaxed coastal character. Residents and visitors use the beach for walking, surfing and swimming, explore the restored Travis Wetland for birdwatching, and gather at the North New Brighton War Memorial Hall and Community Centre. The dunes provide natural hazard protection as well as recreation, managed with ecological and access priorities in mind.

Getting Around

Beach Road, Travis Road and Bowhill Road form the main corridors into and through North New Brighton. Marine Parade runs along the foreshore and links south toward New Brighton proper.

Bus routes serve the coastal suburbs and provide connections to the central city. Parking is available near the beach and community facilities, though popular spots such as North Beach car park can fill at peak times; time limits may apply to encourage turnover.

Cyclists and walkers use the coastal paths and links toward Travis Wetland and Rawhiti Domain. Tsunami evacuation routes include Bowhill Road to Travis Road. The flat terrain suits everyday walking and cycling for local trips.

Getting Outdoors

North Beach offers a long sandy stretch popular for surfing, swimming, walking and sand play, with dunes providing a natural buffer. Surf life-saving patrols operate in season at nearby New Brighton beaches.

Immediately inland, Travis Wetland (Ōruapaeroa) is a large freshwater wetland reserve with walking tracks, birdlife and an education centre; it is one of the last substantial wetlands remaining in the city.

Rawhiti Domain and associated sports grounds support local recreation, while the foreshore and Marine Parade give easy access to the coast. Taiora QEII adds indoor and outdoor pools, a gym and sports spaces on the former QEII Park site. These open spaces give the suburb a strong outdoor focus without needing to travel far.

Community Facilities

The North New Brighton War Memorial Hall and Community Centre hosts local events and gatherings. Taiora QEII Recreation and Sport Centre on Travis Road provides swimming pools (including leisure and hydrotherapy options), a fitness centre and sports facilities open to casual users and members. Medical centres serve the area, and the wider Coastal Ward includes libraries at New Brighton and Parklands.

Community groups and the New Brighton Project support local initiatives across the broader Brighton area. Early childhood centres and play facilities complement the schools. The combination of beach, wetland, hall and recreation centre gives residents practical everyday amenities close to home.
