About Papanui Library
Papanui Library / Te Kete Wānanga o Papanui occupies a purpose-built facility opened in 1995 at the corner of Langdons Road and Restell Street. The modern combined library and service centre replaced earlier community-run libraries that dated back to 1866 in the Papanui area. It opened with a collection of 40,000 books and was officially opened by Mayor Vicki Buck.
The library forms part of the Christchurch City Libraries network, which traces its origins to the Mechanics’ Institute established in 1859.
