Bishopdale Skatepark sits within Bishopdale Park in the family-oriented suburb of Bishopdale, northwest of central Christchurch. The original park catered mainly to intermediate users but had deteriorated, prompting the council to commission a complete redesign. RICH Landscapes led the project, widening the range of features to suit beginners through to advanced riders while retaining the park’s open character.
The redevelopment removed many of the older structures and introduced a variety of new concrete obstacles. These include a 1.65 m hipped quarter pipe with corner pocket, several hips with banked extensions, a double-sided pole-jam, a large pyramid, round rails, manual boxes, volcanos, a funbox with barrier, and a 7.5-foot-radius concrete miniramp. New seating was also added to support longer visits by skaters and families.
The project received community feedback during planning and construction phases. A tender for works was issued in 2021, and the refurbished park reached completion in 2022. Official opening events, including Skate Jam gatherings, drew strong local attendance and highlighted the park’s renewed role as a social and recreational space.
