About CoCA Toi Moroki
CoCA Toi Moroki traces its origins to 1880 when it was founded as the Canterbury Society of Arts, the first organisation in Ōtautahi to exhibit and collect artworks. It remains the oldest arts institution in the country and has supported generations of Aotearoa artists through public exhibitions, dealer activities, and traditional society roles.
The current building, designed in the 1960s by Minson, Henning Hansen and Dines, opened in 1968 and exemplifies Christchurch’s modernist architectural style. It suffered damage in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, closed for strengthening and refurbishment, and reopened in 2015 after a $4 million project as CoCA Toi Moroki Centre of Contemporary Art.
Today the gallery is governed by the Canterbury Society of Arts Charitable Trust. It focuses on supporting artists from the Waitaha region and across Aotearoa, presenting a changing programme of exhibitions in the Ō Papa gallery while the upstairs Ō Raki space hosts the Canterbury Museum Pop-Up during the museum’s redevelopment.
