About South Colombo Library

The South Colombo Library operates as the interim service point for southern Christchurch following earthquake damage to the previous building at 66 Colombo Street in Beckenham. The original structure sustained significant damage in the 2010/2011 earthquakes and was temporarily strengthened before services relocated.

Christchurch City Libraries trace their roots to the 1859 Mechanics’ Institute. The network now includes multiple branches, with the south service currently delivered from the Sydenham site. The library offers standard collections, digital resources, public computers and Wi-Fi alongside community programmes.

A new purpose-built facility named Ōmōkihi (Te Kete Wānanga o wai Mōkihi) is under construction in Beckenham. The $32 million project will include a library, customer service hub, learning centre, café and meeting rooms, with an expected opening in December 2026.

Programmes and Events

Regular activities at South Colombo Library include storytimes and preschool programmes, after-school sessions, book clubs, craft workshops and special events such as chess coaching and green-screen experiences. Events are listed on the Christchurch City Libraries website and change regularly.

The branch supports lifelong learning with free access to resources and community gatherings. Visitors can book spaces for meetings or quiet study and access librarian assistance by appointment.

Future Redevelopment

Christchurch City Council is rebuilding the earthquake-damaged South Library and Customer Service Hub at the original Beckenham site. Demolition of the 66 Colombo Street building will follow once the temporary service is no longer required. The new Ōmōkihi facility will restore a full-service library and customer centre to the southern suburbs.

What Visitors Often Say

Visitors appreciate the convenient location, friendly staff and range of free events for children and adults. Many note the helpful public computers and quiet study areas.

Regular users value the off-street parking and easy access by bus, describing the space as welcoming for families and students alike.
