The Heathcote River / Ōpāwaho is a small, spring-fed city river that winds around the base of the Port Hills through Christchurch’s southern suburbs to the estuary at Ferrymead. Fish & Game says the Avon and Heathcote rivers give excellent fishing for junior anglers and beginners, and access along them is very good.
Grassed bank reserves and paths line much of the river. Below the Colombo Street bridge it is open all year to fly, spin and bait for trout, and you need a Fish & Game licence.

No tides above the lower reach. Heavy rain floods and colours the river, so fish it once it has settled; the tide pushes salt water up the lower reach.
What to Expect
The river is fed mainly by springs, with its main springs at Hillmorton. It meanders around the foot of the Port Hills from west to south-east, past Spreydon, Cashmere, Beckenham, St Martins, Opawa and Woolston, and drains into the Avon Heathcote Estuary / Ihutai at Ferrymead.
Ō-pā-waho means the place of the outward pā, an outpost of Kaiapoi Pā. The river was a food source for inanga (whitebait), pātiki (flounder), tuna (eel) and kanakana (lamprey).
Through Opawa and Woolston the river is narrow and tree-lined, looping between suburban streets, with grassed reserves and paths along much of it and many road bridges, such as Garlands Road and Opawa Road.
The Woolston Cut, built in 1986, takes floodwater, but parts of the river still flood in heavy rain. Salt water pushes upstream with the tide in the lower river.
How to Fish the Heathcote River / Ōpāwaho
Where to fish
Pick any stretch of bank reserve with room behind you to cast. Through Opawa and Woolston, grassed reserves and paths follow the river past Woolston Park and along Aynsley Terrace and Richardson Terrace.
The river is narrow, so a short, accurate cast is all you need, and walking quietly along the bank pays off. This guide covers the freshwater river; for the tidal water where it meets the sea, see our Avon-Heathcote Estuary fishing guide.
Methods
- Bait: worms, freshwater shrimp or live cockabullies fished on the bottom with a small weight. The easiest way for children to start.
- Spinning: allowed on this river, and at its best when the water is coloured after rain.
- Fly: lightweight tackle works best on small spring-fed streams like this one.
Taking kids
The flat grassed banks, paths and short walks from the car make this an easy river for a first fishing trip. Keep children close to you at the edge, and bring a small landing net.
For the city’s other river, see our Avon River fishing guide.
Getting There and Facilities
- Access: the river runs through public reserves in many suburbs. In the Opawa and Woolston reach, look for the bank reserves off Aynsley Terrace, Richardson Terrace and near Woolston Park, between the Garlands Road and Opawa Road bridges.
- Parking: park on the street near the reserves and check the signs.
- Licences: buy online from Fish & Game before you go.
Rules and Safety
- Licence: a Fish & Game sports fishing licence is needed for trout and salmon in all fresh water.
- Above Colombo Street bridge: 1 October to 30 April, fly, spin and bait.
- Below Colombo Street bridge: trout all year, fly, spin and bait. Salmon 1 October to 30 April, fly and spin only.
- Limits: check the 2026/27 South Island regulations for North Canterbury bag and size rules, and any closed areas, before you fish.
- Water quality: in 2020 the council rated the river’s water quality poorly, with eight of the city’s 13 worst monitored sites in its catchment. Wash your hands after fishing, and give the river a miss after heavy rain.
- Flooding: parts of the river flood in heavy rain. Stay off steep or slumping banks when the water is high.
