Stand-downs and suspensions
Cases per 1,000 students in 2025, adjusted for the ages of the school’s students, compared with all New Zealand schools.
These measure how a school responds to behaviour, and schools set their own thresholds, so they are not a measure of how students behave.
What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a Te Ara Huarau School Profile Report from November 2023. This kind of report sets out what ERO and the school will evaluate together, here the effect on students’ achievement, engagement and wellbeing as the school builds its Year 9 and 10 curriculum around strong relationships and high academic expectations.
ERO noted that leaders had been taking part in professional learning for this work, the board had funded staff to lead changes to curriculum and teaching, self-review is well established, and junior students choose interest-based classes, each overseen by a group of teachers who follow their progress and wellbeing.
From here the school plans to give teachers targeted professional learning on curriculum design and teaching, develop a vision for learning that speaks to students and shapes the curriculum, and strengthen teaching that adapts to each student’s needs in mixed classrooms.

Enrolling
Avonside Girls’ High School has an enrolment scheme, so girls who live in the home zone have the right to enrol and need to show proof of their address. Out-of-zone places are offered each year under the scheme in priority order, starting with sisters of current students, and by ballot when a group has more applicants than places.
The school publishes its enrolment dates on its enrolment page each year, and international students apply through its international pages.
