Banks Peninsula Waterfalls

Newton’s Waterfall Christchurch: Short Bush Walk Above Akaroa

Last updated October 2026

Newton’s Waterfall sits in a bush gully in Misty Peaks Reserve, above Akaroa village on Banks Peninsula. A 300 m track from the end of Aylmers Valley Road leads through native bush to the foot of the falls in about 15 minutes. Christchurch City Council manages the reserve and the track.

The falls depend on rain: the council notes the waterfall often dries up completely in summer, so autumn, winter, spring or the days after a good downpour are the times to go. The reserve is about 42 km from central Christchurch in a straight line.

About Newton’s Waterfall

It is a short walk: the track leaves the end of Aylmers Valley Road and runs through native bush to the base of the falls.

How much water you see depends almost entirely on recent weather. In a dry summer the stream can stop flowing over the lip altogether. After steady rain, or through the cooler months, it runs properly. If you are staying in Akaroa, it is worth checking the forecast and saving the walk for a wet spell.

Because the walk is so short, it fits easily into a visit to Akaroa. ChristchurchNZ gives about an hour return for the walk via Aylmers Valley Road from Akaroa village.

Going Further: Misty Peaks

The waterfall sits within Misty Peaks Reserve, a larger council reserve. ChristchurchNZ notes you can carry on beyond the falls for a longer walk towards Misty Peaks. That is a much bigger outing than the waterfall itself, so take water, warm layers and a map, and use the council’s track information to plan it.

Track Conditions

The council warns that in winter the track can be wet and slippery, so wear shoes with grip and take care. The council lists toilets in Akaroa. Check the council page before you go for any track changes, and use Plan My Walk if you plan to continue into the wider reserve.
