The Kaiapoi River runs through the middle of Kaiapoi town and joins the Waimakariri River just downstream. Fish & Game says it fishes best between State Highway 1 and the Waimakariri confluence, with access at the Hall Street boat ramp and Smith Street.
Grassed riverbank reserves line both banks through town, so it is easy to reach on foot. The lower river is open from 1 October to 30 April to fly, spin and bait, and you need a Fish & Game licence.

The Background
The Kaiapoi River curves through Kaiapoi in a channel about 30 to 50 m wide, passing under the Williams Street bridge and the rail line in the town centre. Raven Quay and Charles Street follow the river, and grassed banks with paths run along both sides.
Downstream of the town centre the river runs past Norman Kirk Park and the open grassed land left after the earthquakes, then joins the Waimakariri. Boats launch into the Kaiapoi and run a short distance down it to reach the big river.
Upstream, the river’s south branch is the Silverstream, a spring creek with good trout fishing. Much of it crosses private land, but Silverstream Reserve near Clarkville gives public access to a long stretch.
How to Fish the Kaiapoi River
Where to fish
Fish & Game rates the stretch from State Highway 1 down to the Waimakariri confluence as the best water. In town, the Hall Street boat ramp and Smith Street are the named access points, and the council’s riverbank reserves let you walk the banks between them. Pick a stretch away from the ramp when boats are launching.
Methods
- Bait: worms, freshwater shrimp or live cockabullies fished on the bottom with a small weight. Allowed for trout on this reach.
- Spinning: works well when the water is coloured after rain. Fish & Game suggests Toby, Tasmanian Devil and smaller ticer lures.
- Fly: nymphs, wet flies and streamers. Light gear suits the smaller spring-fed water upstream.
Upstream: the Silverstream
The upper Kaiapoi (Silverstream) is spring creek water with quality trout. Start at Silverstream Reserve near Clarkville, and ask landowners before you fish anywhere else on it.
For the main river at the confluence, including its salmon and sea-run trout, see our Waimakariri River fishing guide.
