Akaroa Beach Christchurch: Swimming, Water Quality and Akaroa Day Trip

Last updated October 2026

Akaroa main beach runs along the town waterfront in Akaroa, the French-settled harbour town on Banks Peninsula, about 90 minutes by road from Christchurch. Akaroa District Promotions describes a sheltered waterfront where the harbour invites swimming, kayaking and sailing right at the doorstep.

Environment Canterbury tests the water at the main beach every week over summer and sends the results to LAWA. The beach holds a Fair long-term grade, which means it is usually fine for swimming but best avoided after rain. Toilets, drinking water, a playground and parking are all within a short walk.

About Akaroa Main Beach

Akaroa sits on the eastern shore of Akaroa Harbour, a long, sheltered inlet on the southern side of Banks Peninsula. The main beach lies along the town waterfront, with cafés, galleries and heritage cottages a short walk away. Akaroa District Promotions describes the town as blending French-inspired heritage with a relaxed coastal village feel.

Akaroa has a French settlement history. French settlers sailed from Rochefort on the Comte de Paris in March 1840 and began the settlement at Akaroa on 18 August 1840, naming it Port Louis-Philippe after the French king.

Days earlier, Captain Owen Stanley of HMS Britomart had raised the British flag at Akaroa, and a monument at the eastern edge of town marks the event. French street names and buildings still give the town its character.

The waterfront has long been the centre of the town. Daly’s Wharf was built between 1863 and 1865, and the main wharf dates from 1887. In 2022 Christchurch City Council planned to rebuild the main wharf in the same position, as the old structure was nearing the end of its useful life.

Hector’s dolphins are often found in Akaroa Harbour and in the Akaroa Marine Reserve at its entrance, and swim-with-the-dolphins boat tours leave from the town. Akaroa District Promotions also lists kayaking, sailing and wildlife encounters on the harbour. Cruise ships also call at Akaroa.

Swimming and Water Quality at Akaroa Main Beach

Environment Canterbury samples the water at Akaroa main beach every week from November to March and publishes the results on LAWA. The beach has a Fair LAWA long-term grade, based on 77 routine tests over the summers of 2020/21 to 2024/25.

Across 162 tests between November 2019 and April 2025, 88% were suitable for swimming. A Fair grade means the water is usually suitable for swimming, but the risk of illness is higher after rain.

The grade has improved in recent years. Environment Canterbury’s grading released in September 2024 lifted Akaroa Beach from Poor to Fair, so it is now considered generally suitable for swimming. Results still vary from week to week: in the 2024/25 summer, 4 of 39 samples were unsuitable.

Rain is the main cause of poor results. Environment Canterbury advises staying out of the water for 48 hours after rain, as runoff can carry bacteria into the harbour.

Testing has found faecal contamination from human and other sources, including birds, dogs and livestock, in a number of bays around Lyttelton and Akaroa harbours after rainfall, and Christchurch City Council has led an investigation into how it gets into waterways.

LAWA also shows hourly water quality predictions for Banks Peninsula harbour sites where they are available, so check the latest result on LAWA before you swim.

The main beach is next to a busy waterfront with wharves, tour boats and moored vessels. Stay well clear of the wharves and boat traffic, and keep children within reach.

Getting There and Facilities

The drive from Christchurch to Akaroa takes about 90 minutes, and Akaroa is at the end of State Highway 75. Public toilets, drinking water, a playground and parking are all within about 100 metres of the main beach, and the council lists free public toilets in Akaroa.

Summer weekends are the busiest time on the waterfront, so arrive early if you want a park close to the beach. A swim fits easily into a day of exploring the town’s heritage buildings, cafés and harbour trips.
