Tikao Bay is a small bay on the western shore of Akaroa Harbour, Banks Peninsula, across the water from Akaroa and about 37 kilometres south-east of central Christchurch in a straight line. LAWA describes a sandy beach with cobbles and a rock wall behind it, popular for kayaking, swimming and boating.
Environment Canterbury tests the water every week from November to March and publishes the results on LAWA, where the site holds a Fair long-term grade.
A Fair grade means the water is usually suitable for swimming but best avoided after rain, and the most recent summer tested was mixed, with 14 of 40 samples unsuitable. Parking near the beach is limited.

What the grades mean
Excellent and Good: rarely unsafe for swimming. Fair: usually fine, but avoid swimming after rain. Poor: often unsuitable, especially after rain, so check the latest result first.
Grades use LAWA’s method: the 95th percentile of routine enterococci results over the five summers from 2020/21 to 2024/25, with at least 50 tests (418 per 100 mL from 78 tests).

About Tikao Bay
Tikao Bay is one of the many small bays that line Akaroa Harbour. The beach is sandy with cobbles, and a rock wall runs along the back of it. LAWA lists kayaking, swimming and boating as the things people come here for, and Christchurch City Libraries describes the bay as a popular holiday spot with a number of baches.
The old Māori name for the bay is Ōkoropeke, and LAWA lists the swimming site as Tikao Bay/Ōkoropeke. According to Christchurch City Libraries, the name literally means “to be doubled up” and was given to commemorate an elderly chieftainess who died from the cold. The more common name, Tikao Bay, comes from Hone Tikao, who lived at the bay.
In 1856, when the purchase of Banks Peninsula from Ngāi Tahu was completed, the bay was included in a 175-hectare reserve called Ōpukutahi, also known as the Wainui reserve.
Only about 40.5 hectares of that reserve remain in Ngāi Tahu hands. During World War II an armament depot was built in the bay on Māori reserve land, which Christchurch City Libraries calls a reminder of dangerous times.
As the bay grew into a holiday spot, a sewage scheme was installed to stop pollution and protect the water for swimming. Tikao Bay is one of seven Akaroa Harbour bays in Environment Canterbury’s current water quality modelling trial, alongside nearby Wainui and French Farm as well as Akaroa Main Beach, Duvauchelle, Glen and Takamatua.
Swimming and Water Quality at Tikao Bay
Environment Canterbury samples the water at Tikao Bay every week from November to March, takes extra samples during and after wet weather, and publishes the results on LAWA. The site has a Fair LAWA long-term grade, based on 78 routine tests over the summers of 2020/21 to 2024/25.
Across 149 tests between November 2019 and April 2025, 79% were suitable for swimming. A Fair grade means the water is usually suitable for swimming, but the risk of illness goes up after rain. Environment Canterbury grades coastal sites on a five-year record and reassesses the grades after each season.
The grade has moved in recent years. Environment Canterbury’s 2023 recreation report dropped Tikao Bay from Fair to Poor, and the 2024 report moved it back to Fair, describing it as generally suitable for swimming again.
The 2024/25 summer was the weakest of the six in the record: of 40 tests, 24 were suitable, 2 called for caution and 14 were unsuitable, and the last sample of that season, in April 2025, was unsuitable.
Christchurch City Council has been investigating how contaminants get into waterways around Akaroa and Lyttelton harbours, and notes that every public and private wastewater connection is a potential source.
Check the latest result on LAWA before you swim. Akaroa Harbour is one of two harbours where Environment Canterbury is trialling a model that makes hourly predictions of water quality from rainfall, wind and tide data, so LAWA can reflect conditions on the day rather than only the weekly sample.
Stay out of the water for at least 48 hours after rain, as Environment Canterbury advises, particularly at Fair and Poor sites. If weekly results stay high during the season, the National Public Health Service can issue a temporary health warning, and the local council puts up signs.
LAWA notes the bay is popular for boating and kayaking as well as swimming, so keep an eye out for boats if you swim away from the shore, and keep children close.
Getting There and Facilities
Tikao Bay sits close to Wainui on the western side of Akaroa Harbour. Akaroa District Promotions’ directions for Wainui are the ones to follow: from Christchurch, take State Highway 75 and turn right at the bottom of the hill towards French Farm and Wainui; from Akaroa, turn left just before the hill at Barrys Bay. The drive from Christchurch to Wainui takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.
LAWA notes that parking near the beach is limited, so arrive early on warm summer days. OpenStreetMap shows public toilets about 150 metres from the testing point. The nearest fuel is at Duvauchelle or Akaroa, so fill up before you head around the harbour.
