About Northwood
Northwood lies on the northern outskirts of Christchurch, developed as a subdivision of Belfast on land that had been used for apple orchards. The name was accepted by the then Shirley-Papanui Community Board. It is a relatively recent residential suburb rather than an older township, with housing that grew alongside the nearby Clearwater development.
The suburb sits near the Styx River system. The Groynes park lies between Northwood and Clearwater, while Styx Mill Conservation Reserve borders the southern side. These green spaces give the area a strong outdoor character, with waterways, open grass and walking opportunities close to homes and shops.
Northwood forms part of the Belfast/Northwood Key Activity Centre under the Christchurch District Plan. Commercial development is focused at the Northwood Supa Centa retail park, which serves both local residents and people travelling the northern approaches to the city.
The wider Harewood Ward also includes Bishopdale, Harewood, Belfast and parts of Casebrook and Yaldhurst, linking Northwood into a larger northern community network.
Today the suburb offers a mix of family and later-life housing, with a residents’ association active on local amenity and partnership projects with the council. Its position near major roads and bus routes supports commuting into the city centre while keeping parks and everyday retail within easy reach.
Getting Around
Northwood is reached mainly via Main North Road and connections to State Highway 1. The Northwood Supa Centa sits just off the highway and provides a clear landmark for drivers.
Metro services stop at or near the Supa Centa and along Northwood Boulevard, including routes that link to Northlands Mall, the city and further north toward Rangiora. Cycle facilities and bike racks are available at the retail centre, and council cycle maps cover wider connections across the northern suburbs.
Shopping and Dining
The main retail focus is Northwood Supa Centa, a large home and lifestyle centre with more than 30 stores. It includes major retailers for furniture, electronics, homewares, automotive and everyday goods, plus food and wellness options.
Free parking (time-limited) and wheelchair-accessible paths serve the centre. Smaller local shopping is available in neighbouring parts of the Harewood Ward, including Bishopdale Mall, while Northlands Mall is a short bus or drive away for a wider range of shops and services.
Getting Outdoors
Outdoor space is one of Northwood’s defining features. The Groynes is a large park between the suburb and Clearwater, with the Styx River running through it and room for walking, picnics and informal recreation.
On the southern side, Styx Mill Conservation Reserve protects river corridor and wetland values and offers quieter nature-focused visits. These areas sit close to residential streets, so short walks or longer outings are easy without leaving the northern fringe of the city.
