About Moncks Bay

Moncks Bay lies between the Pacific Ocean and the lower slopes of the Port Hills. Its eastern boundary fronts the sea, while the western side borders the Avon Heathcote Estuary, an internationally recognised habitat for migratory birds including godwits.

The suburb’s European history began when George Heath acquired 100 acres in 1851. The land passed through subsequent owners before John Stanley Monck purchased it in 1869; he later expanded holdings to approximately 300 acres, giving the bay its name.

Pre-European occupation is recorded at Moncks Cave in neighbouring Redcliffs. The cave, uncovered in 1889, contains archaeological deposits from Archaic Māori moa-hunters and is listed by Heritage New Zealand.

Today the area remains primarily residential, with a small population that values its coastal setting and proximity to both the city centre and the Port Hills tracks.

Te Ara Ihutai Christchurch Coastal Pathway

The Moncks Bay section of the 6.5-kilometre shared pathway opened in November 2023. It provides a flat, scenic route for walking and cycling between Redcliffs and Sumner, with sections cantilevered over the estuary and views of birdlife and the yacht club.

The path connects Moncks Bay to Ferrymead in one direction and Scarborough Beach in the other, forming part of a continuous coastal route promoted by Christchurch City Council.
