Okains Bay Christchurch: Swimming, Water Quality and Banks Peninsula Day Trip

Last updated October 2026

Okains Bay is a sandy bay on the north-eastern side of Banks Peninsula, about an hour and a quarter by road from Christchurch and 22 kilometres from Akaroa. A river estuary runs out to the beach beside the camping ground, and ChristchurchNZ describes the bay as popular for swimming and camping in summer.

Environment Canterbury tests the water in the estuary lagoon every week over summer and sends the results to LAWA. The site holds an Excellent long-term grade on LAWA, the best grade available. Toilets, a playground and the camping ground are all close to the beach.

What the grades mean

Excellent and Good: rarely unsafe for swimming. Fair: usually fine, but avoid swimming after rain. Poor: often unsuitable, especially after rain, so check the latest result first.

Grades use LAWA’s method: the 95th percentile of routine enterococci results over the five summers from 2020/21 to 2024/25, with at least 50 tests (37 per 100 mL from 77 tests).

About Okains Bay

Okains Bay faces the open Pacific on the north-eastern side of Banks Peninsula. LAWA describes Okains Bay as a tidal river mouth with several sand and mud flats, and notes that it is a popular recreational spot, particularly in summer.

The estuary forms where the Opara Stream meets the sea, so the bay offers two kinds of water: the open beach and the calmer, shallower lagoon behind it.

The bay has a long Māori history. Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu describes Kawatea, a name linked to the small bay east of the main beach, as famed in tribal history as a landing place of the migrational waka Makawhiu.

Akaroa District Promotions notes that the area was a long-established kāinga for Ngāi Tahu, valued for its marine resources and sheltered setting, with archaeological sites around the bay showing centuries of settlement, gathering and trading.

European settlement began in the mid-1800s, with sawmilling, farming and small coastal trade shaping the early community. The Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum grew from the collection of local farmer Murray Thacker, who bought the old Okains Bay dairy factory in 1968 to turn it into a public museum.

The first Waitangi Day commemoration at the new museum site was held in 1976, and the carved waka Kōtukumairangi was relaunched there on Waitangi Day 2000 before being gifted to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.

Today the settlement is small and quiet for most of the year, and busier in summer when the camping ground fills with families.

Akaroa District Promotions describes a wide, sandy beach framed by rolling farmland and clear river water. The general store is a common stop on the way down to the beach, and the Millennium Bridge offers a short loop walk.

Swimming and Water Quality at Okains Bay

Environment Canterbury samples the water at the Okains Bay lagoon, at the end of the track, every week from November to March and publishes the results on LAWA. The site has an Excellent LAWA long-term grade, based on 77 routine tests over the summers of 2020/21 to 2024/25.

Across 188 tests between November 2019 and April 2025, 98% were suitable for swimming. An Excellent grade means the water has rarely been found unsuitable, but it is a long-term record, not a promise for any particular day.

Check the latest result on LAWA before you swim. Environment Canterbury advises avoiding swimming for 48 hours after rainfall, when runoff can wash contamination into the water. That matters at Okains Bay, where the lagoon is fed by the Opara Stream.

The bay has two quite different swimming areas. The lagoon is shallow and sheltered, but the water moves with the tide, so watch children closely near the river mouth, especially when the tide is running out.

The open beach faces the ocean and can have waves and currents that change with the weather. Swim within your ability, keep an eye on the conditions, and check the forecast before heading out from Christchurch.

Getting There and Facilities

Okains Bay is over the hill from Akaroa Harbour, and Christchurch City Council puts the drive at about an hour and a quarter from Christchurch. The camping ground sits right on the beach near the estuary, a few minutes from the store.

The council lists free public toilets, a playground and the camping ground at Okains Bay Beach. For a walk, the Kawatea Track starts near the camping ground entrance and follows a 4WD track for 1.1 kilometres, about 20 minutes, to Kawatea/Little Okains Bay. It is shared by walkers and bikers, and dogs are prohibited on it.
