About McLeans Island Track
McLeans Forest sits within the 15,000-hectare Waimakariri River Regional Park and covers a 3,150-hectare section popular with mountain bikers, walkers and runners. The area features exotic pine plantations interspersed with open grasslands and remnant native vegetation, including kōwhai and kānuka. Three one-way MTB loops (Tresillian 10 km, Coringa 5 km and River 2 km) link to create the full 17 km network, while an 11 km walking trail loops from the main car park.
The forest was named after Scottish brothers John and Allan McLean, who purchased the land in 1852 and established Waimakariri Station. Prior to European settlement the area supported kānuka and kōwhai. Flood protection works in the 1930s introduced radiata pines and willows; some native restoration continues today. A 2.6-hectare food and rongoā forest (Te Ao Kōwhai) was planted in 2023 with fruit, nut and medicinal native species.
Additional features include a pump track, skills loop and mini road system designed for skill development and road-safety practice. The River Loop offers occasional river views but is lightly maintained due to flooding. Templers Island Trail extends from the forest along the Waimakariri River toward Brooklands Lagoon, providing a longer shared-use option.

Other Activities in the Wider Park
The broader Waimakariri River Regional Park supports horse riding, fishing and gamebird hunting in designated zones outside McLeans Forest. Shared trails such as Templers Island Trail connect to other sections of the park and form part of the Christchurch 360 Trail route.
