About Kaituna Valley Packhorse Hut Track

The track is well signposted and starts by crossing farmland, following vehicle tracks up a valley filled with native bush. It moves from pasture into forest and crosses the valley stream several times. In summer there are stepping stones, but DOC notes you may get wet feet if the stream is up after rain.

From the valley floor the track climbs steeply onto a big spur and then follows it in the open. This is where the views open out over Kaitorete Spit, Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere and the coast towards Ashburton.

The final stretch follows a farm track through Parkinsons Bush Reserve, which DOC describes as a small but important stand of native forest, before reaching the saddle and Packhorse Hut.

DOC describes it as a great overnight tramp for families with children and new trampers, and it can also be enjoyed as a half-day walk.

Packhorse Hut

Packhorse Hut is a historic stone DOC hut, well placed for views from the saddle. DOC describes it as a sheltered lunch stop on a day walk, or a place to stay the night for families and for trampers on Te Ara Pātaka/Summit Walkway.

Bookings are required and are made through DOC’s online booking system. Sheep and cattle may be around the track and hut, and DOC asks visitors not to touch the animals, including lambs and calves.

Getting There

From Christchurch, take SH75 to Kaituna Valley Road, then turn left into Parkinsons Road after 6 km. Park near the road end where the track starts. DOC says this is more secure than parking at Gebbies Pass.

Track Conditions and Safety

DOC warns that “Kaituna Valley can get very wet and windy in southerly weather” and that the valley gets hot in summer, so carry plenty of water and sun protection. The stream crossings have no bridges.

The stream is normally shallow but can flood in heavy rain, and DOC says the crossings may be unsafe in severe weather. Wasps can be about from September to March, and the native stinging nettle ongaonga grows in the area. Check DOC before you go, tell someone your plans and use Plan My Walk to prepare.
