About Okuti Valley Scenic Reserve Walk
From the picnic area the track zigzags gently uphill through the reserve and comes out on Reserve Road, a shingle no-exit road. You can return the way you came, or walk back down Reserve Road to make a small round trip.
The forest is made up of kahikatea, tōtara, māhoe and kānuka. What makes it special, according to DOC, is the kahikatea growing with large swamp sedge (Carex secta). DOC says this may be the last place on Banks Peninsula where this once-common plant association survives.
It is a short walk, and DOC notes that birds are plentiful in the reserve.
Getting There
On the Christchurch to Akaroa Highway, turn right onto Wairewa Pa Road just before Little River. Shortly after, turn left onto Kinloch Road and follow it to the fork at Okuti Valley Road. Follow Okuti Valley Road for about 3.5 km to the reserve.
Longer Option: Okuti Track
For a bigger day, the Okuti Track starts at the end of Reserve Road and climbs to the Hilltop Tavern on the Akaroa Highway. DOC gives about two hours each way. Check the council’s page for current conditions and tell someone your plans.
