About French Farm Bay

French Farm sits in the French Farm Valley on the western side of Akaroa Harbour, just over the hill from Akaroa itself. The bay is quieter than the Akaroa waterfront, with a grassy foreshore, boatsheds and shallow, sheltered water.

The valley is tied to the early French settlement of Akaroa. Akaroa District Promotions notes that French naval crews cleared land in the valley between 1840 and 1843, in the same years the French settlers arrived at Akaroa on the Comte de Paris. Today the valley is farmland and vineyards that run down to the water.

Akaroa District Promotions describes French Farm as known for its swimming beach, grassy picnic areas and relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, and says the open foreshore suits long lunches and lazy afternoons. The shallow water makes it a common spot for launching kayaks and paddleboards as well as swimming.

The French Farm Aquatic Club sits by the water. Its building has toilets, a library, a barbecue and tea and coffee facilities, and the public toilets are on the main road near the club.

Swimming and Water Quality at French Farm Bay

Environment Canterbury samples the water at French Farm Bay, by the boatsheds, every week from November to March and publishes the results on LAWA. The site has a Good LAWA long-term grade, based on 77 routine tests over the summers of 2020/21 to 2024/25.

Across 122 tests between November 2019 and April 2025, 93% were suitable for swimming. A Good grade means the water has rarely been found unsuitable for swimming, but the grade is a long-term record, not a forecast for the day you visit.

Rain makes the biggest difference. Environment Canterbury advises staying out of the water for 48 hours after rain, because runoff can carry bacteria into the harbour.

Environment Canterbury has found faecal contamination from human and other sources, including birds, dogs and livestock, in a number of bays around Lyttelton and Akaroa harbours after rainfall, and Christchurch City Council has led an investigation into how contaminants get into waterways.

From the 2025/26 summer, LAWA also shows hourly water quality predictions for Banks Peninsula harbour sites, based on rainfall, wind and tide data. Check the latest result and prediction on LAWA before you swim.

The beach is shallow, but it is still part of a working harbour. Boats, kayaks and paddleboards launch from the foreshore, so swim away from where people are launching and keep children within reach.

Getting There and Facilities

French Farm is on the western side of Akaroa Harbour, around an hour and a quarter by road from Christchurch. Akaroa is about 20 minutes away. The nearest fuel is at Duvauchelle (card only) or in Akaroa. French Farm makes an easy stop on the way to or from Akaroa, and the neighbouring bays of Tikao Bay and Wainui are further along the same side of the harbour.
