About North Brighton Beach

North Brighton Beach lies in the suburb of North New Brighton, part of Christchurch’s eastern coastal fringe. The area holds cultural significance as Ōruapaeroa, a traditional food-gathering place for Ngāi Tahu rich in eels and birdlife, particularly around the adjacent Travis Wetlands. Today the beach combines natural dune landscapes with modern recreational facilities developed after the 2011 earthquakes.

The coastline features wide sandy shores suitable for swimming, surfing, and picnics. Coastal paths such as the Southern Pegasus Bay Track and Estuary Edge Walk provide opportunities to explore dunes and observe wetland birds. The beach remains popular for its peaceful atmosphere compared with busier city beaches.

Post-earthquake redevelopment under the New Brighton Centre Master Plan has enhanced the area with upgraded streetscapes along Marine Parade and new attractions. These improvements support both residents and visitors while preserving the suburb’s seaside character.

New Brighton Pier

The New Brighton Pier extends 300 metres into Pegasus Bay and serves as a landmark for scenic walks and fishing. The current concrete structure opened on 1 November 1997. It underwent major repairs and fully reopened in June 2018. The pier remains open 24 hours a day, with fishing permitted daily except Sundays between 10am and 5pm.

He Puna Taimoana Hot Pools and Recreation Facilities

He Puna Taimoana hot pools opened in 2020 as part of foreshore redevelopment. The facility offers five heated saltwater pools, a plunge pool, steam room, and sauna with ocean views.

Nearby, the Taiora QEII Recreation and Sport Centre opened in 2018 on the former Queen Elizabeth II Park site. It provides indoor and outdoor pools, a gym, and community sports spaces.
